The speakers in this course are recognised clinical experts and opinion leaders in the field of Headache. All the speakers are actively engaged in medical education and have been lecturing for several years.
Prof Manjit Matharu is a Professor of Neurology at University College London (UCL) Queen Square Institute of Neurology and Honorary Consultant Neurologist at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen square, London, UK. He is the Clinical and Academic Lead of the Headache and Facial Pain Group at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.
Prof Matharu trained at The University of Manchester and completed his general medical training in London leading up to obtaining the MRCP in 1998. He subsequently obtained a PhD at The UCL Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London. He completed his residency in Neurology at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, The Royal London Hospital and Homerton Hospital in London in 2007 before taking up his current post.
Prof Matharu is a member of the Headache and Pain subcommittee of the Association of British Neurologists. He was a member of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline development group (GDG) for Headache Disorders.
Dr Salwa Kamourieh is a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square in London, UK. She works as part of the Headache and Facial Pain Group and is a co-organiser of the Headache Academy.
Dr Kamourieh trained at Imperial College, London and undertook her general medical and specialist training in North West London. She completed MRCP in 2010 and a PhD from Imperial College, London in 2016.
During her training, Dr Kamourieh developed an interest in headache disorders. Her specialist area are primary refractory headaches (chronic migraine, vestibular migraine and trigeminal autonomic cephalgias), with specific interest in neurostimulation for intractable headache disorders. Dr Kamourieh has authored several scientific papers, contributed to book chapters and has been an invited speakers at national medical conferences and teaching.
Dr Tim Yates has been a Consultant Neurologist at the North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust, and Honorary Consultant at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in the Headache and Facial Pain Group, since 2021. After qualifying with distinction from Cambridge, Tim trained at Addenbrooke’s and then in London at University College Hospital, with higher clinical and academic training in neurology at Queen Square and the Royal Free.
Tim sees inequality as a contributor to the development of chronic migraine and headache morbidity in general. He is looking to develop a specialist headache service at the North Middlesex, which serves one of the UK’s most deprived areas. As Trust Chief Medical Information Officer, with a long-standing interest in clinical informatics, he is examining how modern population health data approaches can reduce inequalities in headache care.
Dr Callum Duncan is a Consultant Neurologist at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where he has run a Headache clinic, along with Dr David Watson (GPwSI Headache), since 2008. He obtained his MBChB from Aberdeen University in 1999, during which he also obtained an intercalated PhD. He trained in General Medicine in Aberdeen, Neurology in Aberdeen and Edinburgh, and Headache in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and the NHNN Queen Square London.
He is chair of the SIGN 155 guideline group which updated guidance on pharmacological management of migraine in 2022. He is a past secretary of the British Association for the Study of Headache (2016-2022) and chair of the development group for the Scottish National Headache Pathway (part of Scottish Government Modernising Patient Pathways initiative).
Dr David PB Watson is an Aberdeen graduate (1984) and GP Partner at Hamilton Medical Group in Aberdeen since 1990. He has worked since 2005 as a headache doctor in the Department of Neurology at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
David chaired the project group that wrote SIGN guideline 107, “Diagnosis and Management of Headache in Adults” published in 2008 and was a group member for SIGN guideline 155 “ Pharmacological management of Migraine” published in Feb 2018. He helped develop Scottish Neurology Standards in 2009 chairing the headache subgroup. He was a member until 2015 of the Scottish National Neurological Advisory Group. He has been a Council member of the British Association for the Study of Headache. He is currently working with the Migraine Trust on a pharmacist educational project.
He has an interest in undergraduate and post graduate education. Outside of medicine he enjoys family activities and cycling.
Dr Giorgio Lambru is a Consultant Neurologist and clinical lead of the Headache Centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK. Dr Lambru gained his degree in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Milan (Italy). He then trained in Neurology at the University-Hospital of Parma (Italy), when he initially developed his interest in Headache medicine. As part of his training, he collaborated clinically and academically with the Headache Centre of the University of Parma from 2005 to 2009, actively involved in clinical research in primary headache disorders. In 2010 he undertook a-one year clinical fellowship within the Headache group at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery developing an interest in trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias and cranial neuralgias that has led him to undertake a PhD degree at the Institute of Neurology, UCL. He is involved in clinical and preclinical research in collaboration with the Headache laboratory within the Wolfson CARD-King’s College London. Dr Lambru has authored a number of scientific publications and presented at national and international headache conferences.
Dr Anderson is a consultant neurologist and the clinical lead for the refractory headache service at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. She qualified in medicine from the University of Edinburgh and trained in clinical neurology in Southampton, Cambridge, Norwich and London. Dr Anderson’s specialist interests focus on the management of cranio-cervical pain and movement disorders with specific interest in the primary refractory headache disorders (chronic migraine, vestibular migraine and the trigeminal autonomic cephalagias).
She retains an honorary position in the Headache Group in the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, but works principally between Addenbrooke’s and Princess Alexandra Hospital.
Jessica Briscoe graduated from Peninsula School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2010. She spent the majority of her working years in and around London, gaining experience in a wide variety of hospital specialties including urology, vascular surgery, cardiology, neurology and cancer medicine.
As well as General Practice, Jessica has developed a special interest in Headache. She has expertise in the management of all headache varieties including migraine and cluster headache and is keen to manage these in a holistic way. She is currently working alongside Dr Lambru at Guys and St Thomas’s.
Dr Krishna Dani is a Consultant Neurologist based in Glasgow. His undergraduate education comprised of an intercalated degree in Neuroscience from Imperial College London and his medical degree was awarded from the University of Glasgow. He completed neurology training in Glasgow and trained in research techniques at the National Institute of Health (Bethesda USA). He was awarded his PhD in metabolic brain imaging from the University of Glasgow.
Dr Dani is currently based at the Institute of Neurological Sciences Glasgow. He works in general neurology and is the lead for the headache service in Glasgow.
Dr Louise Rusk is a GP with a Specialist Interest in Headache in the Ulster Hospital Neurology Department, Northern Ireland. She also works as a GP in Kerrsland Surgery in Belfast. Dr Rusk completed her general medical training in The Royal Group of Hospitals. After she completed her MRCP in 2005, she worked for 18 months in neurology and neurophysiology in the Royal Victoria Hospital. She then trained in General Practice, achieving her MRCGP in 2009 and subsequently developing a specialist interest in headache.
Dr Rusk is passionate about primary care neurology education. She has been actively involved in developing and delivering regional core neurology training for GP trainees in Northern Ireland. She has taught in a number of regional and national teaching courses, and recently the WONCA Europe GP conference.
She has been a member of the British Association for the Study of Headache (BASH) since 2011 and served on Council as a co-opted and then elected member from 2014 to 2019. She has been a Trustee of The Migraine Trust since 2020.
Dr. Mireia Moragas is a Consultant Neurologist in Edinburgh. She trained in Barcelona, Spain, where she developed early interest in headache and stroke. She moved to London in 2011 to spend time in the headache service in The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen square, London, UK.
In 2012 she moved to Edinburgh where she is working as a general neurologist and runs the Headache Clinic, as well as participating in the acute care of patients with stroke. She has participated in the local and Scottish national headache guidelines as well as the local protocols for management of headache and stroke during pregnancy.
Dr Rachael Kilner is a GP with extended role in headaches. She is a GP in Lambeth, South London for the last 24 years, gaining MRCGP and subsequently FRCGP. She has been working as a speciality headache doctor at Kings College Hospital since 2010 and currently also works in headache clinics at St Thomas Hospital and Bromley GP Federation Community headache clinic.
Rachael has an interest in education, gaining a postgraduate certificate in medical education in 2014 and has trained many foundation doctors and GP registrars and this year has been supervising an GP trainee who is doing an integrated training post combining general practice and specialist headache training.
She is also interested in the integration of secondary and primary care of headaches, has been involved in developing the South East London Headache guidelines for GPs, and is currently setting up a GPwER triage service for Kings College Hospital headache referrals and a patient headache education online forum.
